- What IS PFAS
PFAS/PFOA chemicals are known as “forever chemicals,(PFAS) are a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water.
Fluoropolymer coatings can be used in such products as clothing, heat-resistant non-stick cooking surfaces, and the insulation of electrical wire. Many chemicals in this group, have been a concern because they do not break down in the environment, can move through soils and contaminate drinking water sources, and they build up (bioaccumulate) in fish and wildlife. PFAS have been found in rivers and lakes and in many types of animals in on land and in the water.
- Effects of PFAS.
Research on potential health impacts of PFAS/PFOA/PFOS exposure include,
liver inflammation, abnormal thyroid hormone levels, low infant birth weight, decreased fertility, elevated cholesterol, weakening of the immune system, and testicular and kidney cancer.
- How might I be exposed to PFAS?
People are exposed to PFAS in multiple ways, including Drinking Water, eating food contaminated with PFAS, Exposure working at a PFAS production facilities or by the release of PFAS during normal use of house hold products that contain PFAS.
Treating PFAS/PFOA in Drinking Water
EPA has found ways to remove/reduce PFAS from drinking water. These effective technologies include activated carbon treatment (GAC), Reverse Osmosis/nanofiltration, ion exchange resins
- Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) – Chemicals like PFAS/PFOA stick to the small pieces of carbon as the water passes through.
- Ion Exchange Resins –Small beads (called resins) that work like magnets. The PFAS/PFOA stick to the beads and are removed as the water passes through.
- Reverse Osmosis and Nanofiltration –A process where water is pushed through a membrane with small pores. The membrane acts like a wall that can stop chemicals and particles from passing into drinking water.
